GIRD Campaign and Public Meeting to Promote Girls’ Education: In Support of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao

Green Institute for Research & Development (GIRD)undertook a public campaign to promote the objectives Beti Bachao Beti Padhao programme initiated by the Government of India, from 1st April 2017 to 14th April 2017.

Beti Bachao Beti Padhao programme has the following three objectives:

Our campaign mainly focused on the third objective of girls’ education.

We mobilized hundreds of young people especially girls for this campaign conducted in the areas of three districts of Delhi (North West, South West and West). These three districts are among the five districts in Delhi which have been categorized as “Gender Critical Districts”. In India a total of 100 districts have been categorized as “Gender Critical Districts”.

The campaign received a good response from the people who were handed out a booklet containing information about the benefits of educating girls and disadvantages in not sending girls for education and were also orally counseled by our volunteers.

The mark the culmination of the campaign, a Public Meeting was held on 15. 04. 2017 at DMA Hall, Institutional Area, R. K. Puram, Sector-IV, New Delhi

Eminent public figures from different fields spoke on topics relevant to promotion of girls’ education and Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao programme.

On this occasion we also celebrated the life and teachings of Savitri Bai Phule (3.1.1831 – 10.3.1897) who is the foremost woman social reformers in India to champion the cause of women’s education and empowerment.

The public meeting was attended by about 300 people drawn from South West, West and North West districts where we had conducted the public campaign from 1st April to 14th April 2017.   Participants included students, teachers and parents.  Several of them actively participated in the discussion on the importance of girls’ education.

The Public meeting concluded with cultural programmes by students.

Cash prizes were given to five of the students in recognition of their talents.

The campaign and the Public Meeting was supported by the sponsorship extended by the Housing and Urban Development Corporation of India (HUDCO)”
