Dubai, 22 November 2008: Around 200 volunteers of Green Institute for Research and Development (GIRD), a Delhi-based non-governmental organisation participated in the Clean up the World campaign activities at Nad Al Sheba area in Dubai on Friday, the final day of the campaign.
 
Later, Dubai Municipality, the organizers of the campaign honoured Shamsudheen AbdulKhader, secretary of GIRD with a trophy and certificate as the green organization became the fifth largest group to participate in the campaign.
 
It is the second consecutive year the Delhi-based GIRD is participating in this largest volunteer clean up drive in the country, which was observed this year under the banner "Start today…Save tomorrow," from 18 to 21 November at various sites across the emirate of Dubai.
 
AbdulKhader, who worked in Dubai during the seventies and early eighties, said today when Dubai is taking up huge construction projects environmental aspects should take the central stage in order to leave a safe environment for the coming generations.
 
AbdulKhader, who has been involved in environmental and recycling activities for the last two decades, is Vice President, Delhi Chapter, Confederation of NGOs of Rural India (CNRI), which has 7000 members all over India, Advisor, District Advisory Committee of the Indian Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Member, Agricultural and Processed Food Product Export Development Authority (APEDA) Ministry of commerce, Apparel Export Promotion Council Ministry of Textiles, Member, Central Committee of Delhi Malayalee Association and Joint Secretary, Delhi Kerala Muslim Welfare Association.
 
GIRD, established in 1996 by a group of environmental and social activists, works for protection and promotion of healthy natural environment and also takes up programmes of human development of vast sections of Indian populace who have not been able to come up to the current standards of social, economic and educational development. Renowned environmentalists from the faculty of Jawaharlal Nehru University and Delhi College of Engineering are involved in the activities of GIRD
