GREEN INSTITUTE FOR RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT (GIRD) was established by a few like minded social and environmental activists as a non-profit voluntary organization to work for the protection of environment and promotion of environment-friendly products and practices.   The GIRD was registered under the Societies Registration Act (Act No. XXI of 1860) in 1996.
GIRD was set up in the background of rising concern all over the world for the conservation and improvement of the natural environment in order to achieve ‘sustainable development’ of the human kind.  Uncontrolled exploitation of the natural resources, unbridled consumption and materialism, unplanned and insensitive development for economic growth were being seen as grave threats to the very survival of life on the planet earth.  Therefore, there was a need to give voice to the issues concerning the promotion and protection of environment in the affairs of all kinds of development that human kind undertake to advance his comfortable living.  In India, environmental issues had been raised by many enlightened individuals and groups of people on different specific issues which echoed the thinking in the developed world. The founders of GIRD felt that there is a need for an organised group of people to work for constant vigil and for making the larger public aware of the importance of environmental issues not only through dissemination of informed knowledge but also through action programmes.  The establishment of GIRD was to pursue these objectives.

The founders of GIRD were also aware that to sustain the participation of the people and to give meaning to environmental protection programmes, the organization should also be engaged with different socio-economic problems of the disadvantaged sections of the people, particularly with regard to basic education, health, housing, sanitation and empowerment.   The various programmes undertaken by Gird since its inception in 1996 reflect all these concerns. During more than a decade of its existence, our organization could achieve many results through its programmes.  It has got recognition and acclaim from different quarters – governmental, academicians, intellectuals and other organizations.
