Recent trends in Infant Mortality as captured by the Government of India’s National Family Healthy Survey shows that 79 children out of each 1000 live-births do not survive. Malnutrition and Inadequate Health of Mothers, in general and during pregnancy, are the main reasons for this mortality rate.  The effect of this malady is differentially experienced by the different sections of society.  That the position of minorities is far worse than others is attested in the Report by Prime Minister’s High Level Committee (Sachar Committee) of November, 2006.   The Sachar Committee has brought out that The health of Muslims, especially women, is directly linked to poverty and the absence of basic services like clean drinking water and sanitation. The main thrust of GIRD’s Nutrition Enhancement for Weaker Sections programme is, therefore, in the areas inhabited by Minorities and other Weaker Sections of Society such as Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Most Backward Classes consisting of artisan communities and traditional service-providers.
